Me and You

Me and You

(I borrowed these images from my 2011 365 Project. They just seemed appropriate. Giving myself grace for this project to continue on.)

Dear Husband,

Tonight we got to teach a premarital class together. Did you ever dream that we would be doing that? Those early days of struggle and pain did not bode well for us to be teaching others. God has been so kind to us.

Remember when we met? You with your country boy charm — me so young and wild and at my edges. I couldn’t believe you would fall for me. You wrote me a love note on your sandwich napkin and mailed it from far away. I typed you my response and you laughed at my formality. Soon we caught fire and I fell into forever with you.

When the Lord spoke to me about our Katie we had only been married three weeks. You were away playing music and I was walking under the stars praying. A test and a broom closet call later, we both knew the news. Blessing was coming. Sometimes blessings come cloaked in adversity. I clung to the porcelain bowl in the bathroom while you worked digging ditches building biceps and character.

Our flame flickered a little. We ate Ramen noodles and hot dogs and I don’t know how Katie grew so strong or so beautiful. But yes I do. A woman from church told me that God never orders anything he can’t pay for and my faith strengthened. God had ordered our Katie straight out of heaven.

And into our arms.

“Give me my baby!” I begged the nurses who held her a little too long after she breathed our air for the very first time. There was a collective gasp when she made her entrance. So much beautiful black curly hair. My heart grew at least three sizes larger that day when they laid her on my chest. I was a mom.

And you were a dad.

What an amazing daddy you were (and are). Our flame grew brighter and more intense as the Lord added more blessings to our lives. Katie, Annie and Johnny echoed the hallways of our home with laughter and joy. We are 28 years in and I am still wondering why you fell for me. I count every day a blessing with you.

To be continued.

Psalm 117:2~ “For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord.”
